CROSS-BORDER
PROJECT SAGE
... Senior Traveller for Cultural Heritage and Sustainability
SAGE utilises the opportunities offered by cross-border cooperation to improve the quality of life in the participating regions. The focus is on the sustainable use of cultural heritage and natural resources.
Through innovative approaches and close cooperation between Slovenia and Austria, the project provides impetus for sustainable tourism that takes equal account of ecological, cultural and social aspects.
With the support of the Slovenia-Austria Interreg programme, SAGE is setting an example for sustainable tourism and demonstrating how European cooperation can bring about positive change.
SHAPING TOURISM FOR THE FUTURE
Senior Travellers for Heritage and Sustainability
With the launch of the Interreg project SAGE (Senior Travellers for Sustainability and Heritage) in September 2024, the herbal village of Irschen in the cross-border area between Slovenia and Austria is setting new standards in sustainable tourism. Over a period of 24 months, until August 2026, the project is dedicated to the development and implementation of customised, cross-border tourism offers specifically for senior citizens. The aim is to preserve the natural and cultural treasures of the region and at the same time strengthen its tourist appeal in the long term. Our region, rich in cultural heritage and natural beauty, faces the challenge of guiding tourism flows more sustainably and promoting regional value creation. Local services and products are to be more closely networked in order to create synergies across national borders. One focus of the project is on the growing target group of older travellers, whose needs have often not been sufficiently taken into account to date. Demographic changes, such as rising life expectancy and the increasing proportion of over 65-year-olds in the overall population, require new approaches. In a comprehensive analysis of the travel preferences of senior citizens, SAGE will identify specific requirements, such as accessibility, health needs and cultural interests, and develop innovative tourism packages on this basis.
SUSTAINABLE
MOBILITY
.... and regional value creation in focus
A key role in the project is played by the Irschen Herbal Village Marketing Association (KMI), the only Carinthian partner in the consortium to look back on a 30-year success story in sustainable tourism. As a pioneer in the field of sustainability and herbal marketing, the KMI is planning to develop a pilot project for a barrier-free circular hiking trail in conjunction with an interactive tea ceremony and gentle mobility.
The trilingual preparation of guides and promotional materials is intended to appeal to a larger target group from the Alpe Adria region. The combination of enjoyment, tradition and nature creates authentic, climate-friendly offers that inspire both locals and travellers. The aim is to create a supra-regional quality partnership between key players in tourism and gastronomy that strengthens the economy on the one hand and offers guests a unique, regionally anchored holiday experience on the other.
